In Romagna, food is an intriguing and wonderful part of the culture.
The Romagnoli have a simple, rustic style of preparation, and are blessed with some of the most fertile land in Italy. Orchard fruits are grown all around Romagna.Emilia-Romagna is also famous for two of Italy’s most loved exports: Prosciutto ham and parmesan cheese. Piadina is a regional flatbread that is sold throughout the region at cheerful roadside stands. The freshly made bread is filled with different combinations of prosciutto, salami, cheeses and vegetables. They are made to order and are a delicious, inexpensive and particularly regional dish. Fish and seafood are excellent and abundant in these seaside communities. Savory grilled meats with lemon squeezed over them are served family style at large tables, and make a very pleasing and festive meal. Pasta dishes are delightful, as many places will serve fresh pasta, very well-prepared with few, but flavorful ingredients. This homey style of cooking transforms even a simple dish into a robust experience. The wines of the region are wonderful with the flavors of the food. The red Sangiovese is delicious, and every eatery will serve it inexpensively. To be in this region and enjoy the original recipes of old favorites is a joy. This food is rich and satisfying and sometimes surprising, so an adventurous palate will at times help a traveler to really live and eat like a local in Romagna.
